The Finished Door
I stained the door frame before gluing it together around the panel. When the coloring was done, I brushed on a couple coats of amber shellac on the panel to warm it up and give the color some depth.

I've never colored or painted a piece like this before. I appreciate you sharing. I've got to go try this. :)

Blending the color
After coloring areas with the pencils, I used an artist's brush to blend the colors. Because the pencils are water soluble, water on the brush will dissolve the colors, allowing you to blend them together.

Adding Color
At the art supply store, I picked up some watercolor colored pencils. There are two types available, if you try this make sure you get the ones that are "lightfast" I applied a wash coat of clear shellac before coloring to prevent bleeding (into the wood, not me).

Low relief carving
This carving is a bit more detailed than the original. In the original piece, the leaves are outlined and just slightly rounded at the edges. After carving the panels that way, I decided to make them a bit more lively and added deeper relief and more detail.

Carving
Carving is my favorite form of woodworking. When I built a reproduction of the Byrdcliffe "Sassafras" linen press, I added color to the carved leaf patterns in the doors. The original is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the carving in it is more restrained than in mine.

A fitting tribute to the original...the perfect blending of artistry and jointery in a highly functional piece. Well done!
